Urban Generations

The lives that built our towns. The streets we grew up on. The families we come from.

From Ancient Footsteps to Modern Front Doors

Urban Generations uncovers the lived stories of the Northeast of England and Cumbria — told across time, across communities, and across generations.
This isn’t just history. This is our shared inheritance.

Explore the past — not through textbooks, but through the voices, memories, and everyday echoes of the people who were here before us and those that are here with us now!

A New Take on Ancestry!

Urban Roots is our region-wide initiative to build a living, breathing family history of the North East and Cumbria — stories shared by real people, in real communities. We want to work with families, historians, and contributors to build an enormous regional family tree. But this isn’t just names and dates – this is stories, nicknames, jobs, and marriages across streets, towns, and centuries.

Memory, Voices & Legacy — Told by You!

This is about real voices, real lives, and the ordinary moments that shaped our communities – and still echo through them today. A Digital Time Capsule built by the people of the Northeast and Cumbria. Storing everything from handwritten letters, scanned photos, voice recordings, family tales & fragments of memory – from all walks of life and every era – it all matters. It all belongs here!

Hands-on History for Everyone!

Urban ReLived invites you to step into history quite literally through hands-on challenges and practical re-creations. This is about lived experience – the skills, routines, and daily graft of people across centuries, from every class and corner of the Northeast & Cumbria. From baking in a wartime kitchen to writing with a quill, scrubbing with lye soap to stitching by candlelight – it’s not performance, it’s participation! This is history you can touch, wear, build, and burn your fingers on!

Our Past is in the Stone!

The streets beneath us. The buildings around us. The lives they witnessed. Urban Foundations uncovers the stories of places, not people. The homes, schools, pubs, and high streets that shaped everyday life across generations in the Northeast & Cumbria. From cruck cottages and council estates to Roman forts and vanished landmarks, we dig into where life happened – brick by brick. It’s not memory – it’s structure. It’s not family – it’s foundations. It’s not about who lived there – it’s about what survived!
